A potential sensational return to the Harambee Stars for legendary former captain Victor Wanyama is stirring the Kenyan football scene. The midfield enforcer, who hung up his international boots in September 2021, has revealed he is in discussions with new national team head coach Benni McCarthy about a possible comeback.

A towering figure in Kenyan football, Wanyama’s career boasts impressive stints. Playing for European giants Celtic, Southampton, and Tottenham Hotspur, where he notably played in a UEFA Champions League final. For Kenya, he amassed over 60 caps, captaining the side and netting six goals. Including leading the Harambee Stars to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt.

The prospect of the 33-year-old’s return elicits mixed reactions. His undeniable experience, leadership qualities, and big-game temperament could be invaluable assets for a Harambee Stars squad aiming to make a mark. Especially with Kenya set to co-host the 2027 AFCON. His presence could galvanise the team and offer mentorship to younger players.

However, Wanyama’s potential return also fuels the ongoing debate about the national team’s reliance on older players versus fostering fresh talent. Critics argue that focusing on younger players is crucial for long-term development. Recalling a player who has been inactive from top-flight football for a period might send the wrong message or block the pathway for an emerging star. They advocate for building a sustainable team for the future. Questioning if an aging player, regardless of past glories, fits this vision.

While Wanyama’s return could inspire, it raises questions about relying on an aging player. At 34 next month, his physical prime may be behind him. His recent success with Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Championship and his decision to extend his contract and stay suggest that he will remain away from any serious type of football. McCarthy’s focus on youth, evident in his work with Kenya’s U20 team, suggests a long-term vision. Emerging talents like Victor Omune could benefit from Wanyama’s mentorship, but over-reliance risks stifling their growth.

Getting Wanyama in a mentorship role is definitely something that would benefit the Rising Stars prospects. But other than that, it might not be a wise decision for McCarthy.
